Thought collagen was just for the skin? Think again! (1 of 4)

It is well known that collagen is a big part of our skin. Perhaps you would be surprised to realise the other important functions that collagen plays in our body.

Wound healing and skin regeneration

Collagen helps with wound healing and repair. The cells located within the top layer of the skin called epidermis, are known as keratinocytes. These cells divide and as they get to the surface of the skin, they die and shed. As a result, the skin is able to regenerate itself. This would not happen if there was no collagen underneath the epidermis, to support cell division.

A good example of this, when it is especially important, is following pregnancy, when the body tries to reform itself back to pre-pregnancy, and collagen supplements have been shown to improve stretch marks.

The great thing about ingesting collagen is that it is biocompatible. This means it will not cause an adverse reaction as the collagen is very similar to the collagen made in the body. It reaches the skin through blood vessels and stimulates collagen production in the skin.

We have all heard of fillers, as a way of creating the appearance of youthful skin, which work by filling the space within the skin where collagen has been broken down. The effects of taking collagen supplements are superior to fillers, which can generate an allergic reaction, and over time, the filler will degrade, and the effect wanes. By taking collagen supplements, however, you can continue to increase collagen production.
